Micky4Fun would have to be one of the most prolific PlayBasic programmers in the PB community, routinely pumping out new games on almost a monthly basis. Recently he's taken on the challenge of remaking the classic arcade game Pooyan, with his own sprinkle of flair to boot. While the game is still only at work in progress stage, it's already showing great promise. Check it out !
The Easter mini game challenge ended a little over a week ago, followed by a week of community polling to award the winner. Unfortunately we had some issues with the first poll and ended up having to run a second. So it took a little longer than we’d hoped. But the results are finally in.
Before we get to the winner, we’d just like to congratulate the contestants for their outstanding efforts given the limited time frame. I’d go as far to say, they’re potentially some of best submissions so far.
Since this was a community competition and given the limited number of submissions we’re gone purely on the community votes when awarding the winner. Which was Micky4fun with his Egg Selector with 8 votes, with Balaporte’s game Egg Hunt taking second place with 3 votes.
So congratulations to Mick for another fine effort!
In the spirit of a little Easter holiday fun, we're setting the PlayBasic community a week long design and programming challenge. The objective here is to cut through the fat and get to the core of your game idea fast, without the inevitable feature creep. So the game designer needs to formulate their concept, then build a working prototype of the game within 7 days or less. (16th/April/2011 - 24th/April/2011)
Easter 2011 Mini Game Programming Competition Survey
It's been a while since we had any sort of programming competition around here, so perhaps it's time for a MINI compo. What's that ? - It'd a be competition held within a short time frame, from anywhere between say over the Easter long weekend (3 days) as far out as about a week.
In terms of a theme, then the most obvious would be Easter eggs, the genre of game would be up to you.
Found a bunch of old tech demo video captures from way back in around 2006 to 2007 and have been uploading them tonight (mostly as is)
Thesius XIII - This isn't the final tech demo, it's taken about 1/2 way through development. So it's missing a bunch of objects types, but you get the idea.
Pumpkin Patch is a mini game written over a day for the PlayBasic Halloween Mini Game Challenge. The challenge was to make a pumpkin themed game over the Halloween weekend (in 48 to 72 hours). Pushed for time and artwork, I recycled some graphics and threw together Pumpkin Patch.
The game play is clearly Boulder Dash inspired, but with a few small differences. Namely it's far less polished, and the game only features two interactive character types. Those being Rocks and Pumpkins. The players objective is to collect enough pumpkins to open the exit. However the level doesn't have enough Pumpkins on it's own, so the player must create them. New pumpkins can be created by dropping rocks on them. This makes them explode . Much like the dropping a rock on diamond in Boulder Dash. All the player has to do is explode enough pumpkins and get to the exit safely. Sounds easy..
